Review: Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda (Creekwood, #1)Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

MY EXPERIENCE WITH THE BOOK:
Rating change: 5 stars is now down to 4 stars. I think Albertalli’s later book, the Upside to Unrequited, is much better ❤️.

CHARACTERS/DYNAMICS:
Simon: more basic than I remember. But it’s great that he’s not a stereotype.

Blue: duller than I remember. But equally mysterious— I forgot his true identity (and I’m ReReading this!)

Leah: is a freaking bitch????? I do not like her. How is there a book solely about her??????

Abby: yes. Great. Fab. Super fun. Helpful. Not a stereotype either. I loved it.

Nick: who? Cares?

PLOT:
Honestly, nothing happens until Simon gets drunk. Which is in the last third of the book. It was quite underwhelming. 15 year old me loved this book.

STRUCTURE:
This book includes a series of emails between Simon and his anonymous beau, Blue. It’s told from Simon’s perspective. He’s not that inquisitive or profound. It’s just a fun, upbeat story.

THEMES:
– gay teens
– fat girls (barely)
– love in the digital age

THE ENDING:
The ending is the best part of this book. It’s what stops me from rating it even lower.

IMPACT:
I now know that Becky can write even better, and my 15-year-old self over-hyped books (unsurprisingly).

Suspenseful, humorous and well written! One of my new JGreen type of stories 🙂 I didn’t like the claim on lesbian and female bisexuals having an easier journey of dealing with their non-heterosexuality. Aside from that, the LGBT was captured perfectly!!
