(Seven) Sensational Books I’ve Read This Year (… so far!)

We’re officially half-way through 2018. I have only read 35 books this year (excluding my university reads), and even fewer that were published in 2018. But please note: most have been published recently (within the last decade). Here are seven reads that have been the highlight of the past seven months.¬†They’re in no particular order of favouritism, all have been stellar! ūüôā

Falling Kingdoms (Falling Kingdoms #1) by Morgan Rhodes

Falling Kingdoms (Falling Kingdoms, #1)

My rating: 5/5 stars.

Condensed review: I loved the world, the characters AND the plot. This book was a perfect match for me.

Caraval (Caraval #1) by Stephanie Garber

Caraval (Caraval, #1)

My rating: 4.5/5 stars.

Condensed review: I thought I was going to¬†loathe¬†this book. The hype made me feel put-off, and revolt against the sensationalisation of Garber’s debut. In effect, my expectations were so low that they made me pleasantly surprised and entertained. The characters have annoying, stubborn traits, but the world and writing-style is soothing.

Scythe (Arc of a Scythe #1) by Neal Shusterman

Scythe

My rating: 5/5 stars.

Condensed review: This book made me fall in love with reading again. Hooray! If you’re in a book slump, I highly recommend you read this series.

The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart by Holly Ringland

The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart

My rating: 4/5 stars.

Condensed review: This book is heartbreaking and full of tragedy. It’s dark and shows the full life of an abused girl. From living in a cult to escaping the death in her family, Alice Hart turns into a beautiful woman who sees history repeating itself when she’s older.

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

Big Little Lies

My rating: 5/5 stars.

Condensed review: This book is my 2018 obsession!

The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air #1) by Holly Black

The Cruel Prince (The Folk of the Air, #1)

My rating: 5/5 stars.

Condensed review:¬†Great beginning, middle, and ending. A fantastic and diverse group of characters, all incredibly realistic and relatable. I can’t wait for the sequel.

Warcross (Warcross #1) by Marie Lu

Warcross (Warcross, #1)

My rating: 4/5 stars.

Condensed review:¬†The romance in this book was a SNORE. But the main protag wasn’t too high-strung and spirited, which made her appear far more humble than “poor” Celaena Sardothian from Throne of Glass.
