Review: Beautiful Disaster

Beautiful Disaster (Beautiful, #1)Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

If you are related to me in any way, I’d appreciate if you didn’t read this post. Unless you wanna read about me having the obscene hots for fictional characters. Thanks.

The only reason this didn’t get 5/5 stars is because this relationship is absolutely toxic and borderline abusive.

I’m extremely weary about any book couples now, especially ones with “mysterious” or “dark” love interests, after reading It Ends with Us.

My Experience with the book:
This has been on my TBR list fo eons. It was one of the first books I added to my To Be Read pile once I joined Goodreads. So in many ways, this book was hyped up for me. No pressure. However, it took me a whole week to read. IN THE MAKE ME READ-A-THON CHALLENGE. What a failure.

The Main Characters:
1. Travis
Red flags, and I’m sure theres 1000 willing women out there that want a guy like this, but his believes and actions made me want to throw up a lil. He’s sexist (as the protag points out, in which is simply rebuts “[sexism] isn’t what he meant”), argumentative, and immensely aggressive. And they’re never justified. In fact, (view spoiler) I still don’t know why he didn’t like Trent until suddenly at the end (but maybe if I read Walking Disaster I’ll understand). I cannot fathom how I went from finding him admirable to such a manipulative, abusive P-O-S, in such a short time frame.

2. Abby
Plain Jane. That’s about it. At this point, I’m not bothered to say much about her. Oh but probs for leaving when Travis was a dick.

description

3. The side characters; Rosalie and Emmett America and Shevley
They were probably more interesting as a couple than the main ship, but I usually say that. But idk idk that could just be me not liking Travis…

Character Dynamics:
I don’t think there was a single relationship in this book that wasn’t toxic or manipulative. Maybe America and Abby, but then again, they still had small issues. But nothing like the ones they had with every male on the god-damn planet.

The Plot:
Cliche as hell. But I’m not picky with cliches. I was pleased this was only one book, compared to being strung out like other contemporaries. This book has HEAPS of drama. Also: the only way somebody in this book can resolute conflict is through; bodily harm or abandoning their life’s situation altogether. But maybe that’s realistic, since they’re all 19- 20ish?

description

The Ending:
HEA. But should they have a happy ending??? So soon after such awful things said and done??? K whatever maybe people want a fluffy ending after an intense plot.

So that’s about it. It’s mediocre. I never wanted to DNF, so that’s a good sign 🙂 Yay! I’ve finally read this book!

  1. 😂 it sounds like you hated the book. I’m surprised you gave it 4 stars. When I read it back then, I thought the relationship were complicated and especially the first phase was problematic, but I don’t think it was abusive or rather that it was displayed as something good and should be duplicated or something to strive for. I think that people who suffer and experience bad things can’t have a healthy relationship, but the good thing about this book was that it showed you, that you can and need to walk away from it. However much you love that person, you need to come first. But it’s eons ago, since I read the book, so I may remember it all wrong.
